| During routine re-development work a Romancaldarium,
steam bath, was excavated. This well preserved semi-circular bath has steps
at both ends and a nearby plunge pool. Tiles show actual footprint indentations
and also an insignia of a Roman legion; believed to be that of the famous
9th legion, who founded Roman Eboracum in AD71. |

Beneath the pub lay the remains of York's legendary baths,
brilliantly diplayed and open to the public for the first time in 2000 years! The Roman Baths are open to view from 10am to 7pm every day except Christmas day, with an admission charge payable at the bar which is open during licensing hours. |
