The Roman Bath was originally called the 'Cooper', then the
'Barrell Churn' and the 'Barrell' in the late 18th century. George Pencock
a mail coach driver became the landlord in 1823. In keeping with the tavern's
prominent status as a coaching inn, it settled down for the next 140 years
to be called the 'Mail Coach'.
In 1970 the tavern changed it's name to 'The Roman Bath' and a plate glass
viewing area was built into the floor. However, to do justice to this discovery
the tavern has recently turned the site into a museum.
